A team from Israel’s far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party beat a Palestinian soccer club in a game to secure a coveted Israeli championship title in a match that was not televised in Israel.
The game was played at the Jerusalem soccer stadium in central Israel on Sunday afternoon and was streamed live on the Israeli sports channel YNet.
The match was part of the Israeli League Championship Series, which is the second annual championship of the national team.
The Israeli league, which also features the Israeli national soccer team, is not widely watched in Israel, and has not had any success in recent years.
However, Yisroel Beiteineru, a Yisros party leader, said the win was an important milestone for the league.
“We hope to make history by defeating a Palestinian team in a competitive game, which means that the whole country will have an opportunity to see the Israeli team in action,” he said.
A senior Palestinian soccer official, Sami Abu Zahra, said he was “very happy” about the victory and hoped to see it become the first Israeli team to win the championship.
The league champions had to play four games to win their first championship title.
The Palestinian side beat the Israel Football Federation’s team 2-0 in a playoff game.
The Palestinian team, which plays in the European League, won the league championship for the first time last year.
It beat Israel’s second-ranked side, Israel’s No. 5 team, 2-1 in a qualifying match for the European championship.
In addition to winning the league title, the Yisrov Beiteins had to win five games in the final round of qualifying to qualify for the second round.
The Palestinians also won the Israeli championship last year, and won the European title this year.
Last month, Israel imposed new border restrictions on Palestinian refugees living in the occupied West Bank.
It has also banned Palestinian-owned businesses from entering Israel, with some Jewish settlements in the West Bank under tight security and restrictions on movement.
